Drug Testing Policy Implementation
Any company should review all the factors that must be considered before implementing a drug testing policy. There are various drug and alcohol policies. Employee manuals provided by the company contain simple or complicated provisions relating to drug testing during pre-employment and post-employment stages.
Most employers enforce a drug testing policy in an effort to maintain a workplace free of drugs and alcohol. There is no law mandating employers to require their employees to undergo drug testing but employers have taken their own initiative to enforce their drug test policy to check who are under the influence thus rendering them unfit for work. It is essential for a company to have a drug testing policy, and it must coincide and be related to various legal issues that may arise.
A drug testing policy can be written like this. The company’s policy is not to employ the services of people who take illegal drugs or people who consume liquor than the standard consumption. The Company reserves the right to require every employee to submit to mandatory or random drug testing as a continuing condition of their employment as the Company deems this as necessary for a safe and efficient operations of its goals. Anyone who refuse to undergo such drug testing or test positive for substance abuse may be suspended from duty pending investigation and may be subject to sanctions as provided by the company handbook.
In writing a drug testing policy, employers must deem the policy fit for the employee’s line of work. Employers should make sure their policies address the issue of the perils that drug and alcohol present. Employers should also ensure that the policy contains a detailed description enumerating what is prohibited. It must be shown in written form what are the situations that should be avoided, the types of drugs that are prohibited and the right alcohol level that is allowed when coming to work.
A drug testing policy goes hand in hand with a credible drug testing facility. This would make sure that the results would be irrefutable.
This would make sure that the identity of the one being tested would not be identified by any common Joe.
Finally, it is important that a drug testing policy is clearly written and understood by employees, and they should affix their signature stating this. This would help the company against frivolous suits arising from the tests.
